The kitchen is often considered the focal point of the home. With so many families pressed for time these days, it’s not surprising that the kitchen island would double as both dining table and meal prep area. Depending on your current kitchen island, you might only need to make a few modifications. More extensive renovations may be required if your current island lacks an overhang or sufficient elbow space for diners.
Renovating the Kitchen Island Countertop
Countertops on kitchen islands often overhang. If yours doesn’t or if the overhang is too small, you may need to consider investing in a new countertop. An overhang is crucial for allowing people to sit at the island. It gives diners a bit of leg room. You’ll need an overhang of at least six inches. However, nine to 12 inches is recommended for greater comfort.
Considering a Bubble Island
Is your kitchen either an open concept area or is it a square room? If either of those descriptions apply, then a bubble island would work well for your space. Most kitchen islands are long and rectangular, just like dining room tables. The bubble island is different. It features a node or bubble on one of the long ends of the island. Picture a standard, rectangular kitchen island. Now, picture a circular breakfast table. Chop the circular table in half and attach it to one of the lengths of the rectangle—this is what a bubble island looks like. You’ll be able to arrange chairs around the bubble to create dining space, yet still use the other side of the island for meal prep.
Choosing the Right Type and Number of Chairs
If you plan to use your kitchen dining space primarily as a breakfast or coffee nook, then high stools would work well. Otherwise, you may want to select high chairs with backs to allow greater comfort for longer meals. Make sure there is enough elbow room between each chair. Each chair should have about 30 inches of space at the island.
