If your New Year’s resolution was to get organized, then the kitchen is the perfect place to start. You can transform those messy kitchen drawers to make it easier to find what you’re looking for, which will help you get dinner on the table more quickly. But if your kitchen is outdated, you might also consider a whole kitchen renovation. Talk to design experts to find out how new styles of kitchen drawers can help you stay organized.
Eliminate the clutter.
Kitchen drawers tend to get messy easily, since the clutter is hidden from view. Before you can get your drawers organized, you need to sort through the items in them. Start going through the clutter one drawer at a time. Figure out which items you never use and can get rid of.
Sort the items into categories.
Each drawer should feature similar items. It doesn’t make sense to keep the kitchen knives with the aluminum foil and plastic baggies, for instance. Use the following categories as a general guide.
- Silverware
- Cooking utensils (spatulas, etc.)
- Foil, plastic wrap, and baggies
- Tupperware
- Baby items (bibs, sippy cups, etc.)
- Soft items (potholders and clean kitchen towels)
Use drawer dividers and organizers.
Once you have all of the items in their proper categories, you can start to add drawer dividers. Look for organizers that have multiple types of compartments in different sizes, shapes, and lengths. Be sure to measure your drawers before purchasing any new dividers or organizers. If you have deep kitchen drawers, look for layered dividers to maximize the space. You can use diagonal dividers for items that have unusual or awkward shapes. Diagonal dividers are also ideal for exceptionally long utensils, like tongs.
