Kitchens are usually kept fairly clean simply because they are areas where food is stored, prepared and eaten. On a regular basis, floors are generally swept and mopped, counters wiped down, and stove tops and kitchen sinks kept clean.
However, those quick daily once-overs don’t address food particles that fall between cracks and appliances, grease buildup under cabinets and stove ventilators, or dust that gathers on shelves and in storage spaces. Occasionally, a deep cleaning is required to keep your kitchen sparkling clean and your family healthy.
Professional kitchens in restaurants and other public food service businesses usually deep clean at least once per week (which means taking everything out of the kitchen and thoroughly cleaning). However, homes don’t have near the activity or traffic and, thus, can be deep cleaned less often. A good rule of thumb is to deep clean your home kitchen once every three months. The process does not have to be painstaking and can be done fairly quickly by following these deep cleaning tips from Southwest Kitchen and Bath.
Step 1: Remove and Clean the Clutter
The first step is to clean and remove or store all clutter. This includes all the small items that are present in the kitchen such as removable small appliances and trash cans. Wash any dirty dishes and silverware and then clean and remove or store all small items from off of shelves, counters, tables, etc.
Step 2: Prep the Oven
Oven buildup normally takes time to loosen. Therefore, go ahead and apply your favorite cleaner so it can be soaking.
Step 3: Empty and Clean the Refrigerator
While the oven is soaking, empty the refrigerator. Consolidate condiments, throw away old items, wipe down storage containers, etc. Then, using hot soapy water, thoroughly wash down the entire inside and then the outside of the refrigerator.
Step 4: Finish the Oven
Return to the oven and clean it out. It should be much easier now that it has had time to soak. Finish by thoroughly wiping down the entire outer surface with hot soapy water.
Step 5: Clean the Cabinets
Next, wipe down all cabinet surfaces using hot soapy water. Be sure to thoroughly clean all surface spaces, including cabinet tops that attract dust and bottoms that attract grease and food splash.
Step 6: Clean Ceiling to Floor
Now it’s time to start at the top and work your way down the entire room. Start with ceiling light fixtures and fans, move down the walls to countertops and all the way to the floor.
Step 7: Clean the Floor
The final cleaning step is to thoroughly sweep and mop the floor.
Step 8: Return All Items
Now that your kitchen has been deep cleaned, return any items you initially removed and enjoy your beautiful, sparkling clean kitchen!
