Homeowners tend to spend more time thinking about aesthetics than construction when choosing new kitchen cabinets. But it’s also important to know the inherent differences between plywood and MDF cabinetry, as either type can be made to conform to virtually any aesthetic preference. Talk to the design specialist at the kitchen renovation company about your options.
Construction
Both plywood and MDF are engineered wood products. Plywood is made by fastening multiple wood veneers together to form a composite product. MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, is made by combining wood fibers with resin and wax. The mixture is pressed or molded into shape. You’ll also hear MDF referred to as “particle board.”
Strength
MDF and plywood are both strong products, but plywood has the advantage. The layers of veneer used to make plywood are laid down in an alternating fashion, so that a cross-grain pattern develops. Since moisture and heat causes wood to expand and contract with the grain, the use of a cross-grain pattern makes plywood exceptionally resistant to these environmental stressors. MDF can swell when it sustains water damage. Additionally, plywood holds up better than MDF to nails and screws, and it can hold a glued joint.
Finishes
MDF is far more versatile than plywood regarding finish options. Because of the roughness of the surface of plywood, it won’t look as aesthetically pleasing if it’s painted. Veneers are really the only option here. In contrast, MDF cabinetry can be lacquered or painted, or it can be treated with exotic veneers. This means MDF cabinetry tends to have more of a luxurious look, even though it costs less than plywood cabinetry.
