When planning a kitchen remodel or designing your new kitchen, making sure it is functional can be one of the hardest parts of design. We’re sharing some common questions about kitchen design that may help you.
What is the “kitchen triangle”?
The kitchen triangle is a concept used to maximize efficiency of your kitchen. Depending on the layout of your kitchen—galley style, L-shaped, U shaped, etc.—the exact configuration may vary, but the theory centers on your sink being located between the stove and refrigerator. With this work triangle, you’ll be better able to move around the kitchen with minimal steps while cooking and cleaning, so you can get the most out of the space.
How do I make my small kitchen look bigger?
One way to make your kitchen look bigger is to consider an open layout where your kitchen is connected to another room of your home. This is a particularly good idea if you entertain guests and don’t have room in your kitchen for multiple people. If your living room is near the kitchen, you might remove the wall between the rooms or create an opening to connect the spaces.
How can I add storage space?
Adding drawers to lower cabinets can maximize storage space. Drawers are especially useful at preventing you from having to crawl into the cabinet to reach items at the back. Installing a drawer under your oven also provides storage for frequently used baking items, like cookie sheets.
Should I install and island?
Kitchen islands are great for adding countertop and storage space, but they can also influence efficiency. When considering adding an island, you want to be sure there are at least 45 inches of buffer space around each side of the island. This allows enough room for doors, drawers, or appliances to be used without hindering traffic flow within the kitchen.
