A much-needed boost to the struggling remodeling market may be around the corner in the form of legislation that should be supported by all facets of a kitchen/bath industry being dragged to its knees by the ongoing housing slump.

The potential relief is currently on Capital Hill in the form of a bill – called the “Home Improvements Revitalize the Economy (HIRE) Act” – that would provide tax credits to stimulate residential remodeling, including the purchase of kitchen cabinets and other key products.

Instead of splurging on the whole kitchen, select an area that will have the most impact on the overall look of your project. In the kitchen, this can be your island, or hood, or buffet area. Perhaps you’ll spend a little extra on some design touches, but since it’s targeted on a small area, it won’t break the budget. For an island, this might mean selecting a premium fi nish, adding
some furniture legs, or selecting an unusual countertop.

In each section of this issue, we will be highlighting ways homeowners can remodel for less. It’s no secret the market is soft, but it doesn’t mean people don’t want, or need, to update their homes. One way to save money – believe it or not – is to hire a professional. Many homeowners hope to save money on their remodeling projects by doing everything themselves. In the long run, hiring an experienced professional can actually help you come out ahead. Excerpted from Better Homes & Gardens Kitchen & Bath
Ideas January 2009 issue: “Professional Designers know where to get high-quality products and have connections with wholesalers, dealers, and contractors to get you the best products you can afford.”
